Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday launched the Naya Pakistan Health Card or Sehat Card Initiative in Punjab named ( Naya Pakistan Sehat Card Punjab) alongside Chief Minister Usman Buzdar. This is a similar initiative to the health programme launched in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa last year, and it will provide access to health cards for the citizens of Punjab.

While addressing the launch ceremony of the Naya Pakistan Health Card in Lahore, the prime minister said that all families in Punjab will have access to Naya Pakistan Sehat card Punjab by March 2022. The Prime Minister has launched this initiative in line with the concept of an Islamic Welfare State, or Riyasat-e-Madina.

The Government will start issuing Naya Pakistan Sehat Card Punjab to the citizens of Punjab from January 2023. Within three months, all families in Punjab will have access to health cards. Shedding light on how important it is for a country to have the modern and state-of-the-art medical infrastructure, the premier said that when his mother was diagnosed with cancer, his family had to take her abroad for treatment, which pushed him to establish a cancer hospital in Pakistan where people, especially the poor, could go for treatment free of charge. He said the people had to sell their belongings while getting treatment.

He maintained that the country has to spend Rs 100 million per year to run the health system. He praised his government’s policy of imposing smart and micro-smart lockdowns instead of a full-fledged lockdown during the coronavirus pandemic. He said that 6.2 million scholarships are being provided to youth, worth 47 billion rupees, to encourage deserving students from low-income families. Addressing the ceremony, Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar said that the health sector is the Punjab government’s top priority. He said that nine hospitals had been set up in the last three years.

Punjab Health Minister Dr Yasmeen Rashid said that 8.5 million health cards had been distributed in Punjab so far. She said that 30 million families would be provided health cards by March next year under this program.
